S3 Art and Design
The S3 Art & Design elective allows pupils to cover Level 4 experiences and outcomes in greater depth, building upon their Art & Design education in S1/2. It allows pupils to develop skills for learning, skills for life and skills for work whilst experiencing challenge and success. Art & Design in S3 also provides a strong platform for later learning and for successful transition to qualifications at the right level for all pupils.
The purpose of the course is to provide a broad practical experience of Art and Design and related critical activity. The course provides opportunities for learners to be inspired by experimenting with how they can visually represent their personal thoughts and ideas and create imaginative expressive and design work. They will develop their critical thinking skills as they develop and produce their own creative work and develop their understanding of Art and Design practice. Pupils will experience a wide range of activities throughout the course, with a focus on improving their skills in Design and Expressive Art. This will be done through:
- Developing drawing and investigative skills useful in both Expressive and Design work.
- Creating Expressive work based on painting, sculpture and printmaking.
- Solving design problems and creating Design work showing the design process and their own solution to the design problem
- Learning to express their ideas about works of Art and Design
Throughout each aspect pupils will evaluate performance, identify development needs and plan and implement a programme of work for improvement. Pupils will then be fully prepared for the transition to the senior phase.
Progression Pathways in Art & Design
The S3 Art & Design elective offers numerous progression pathways into the senior phase. Most pupils would follow a pathway which would allow them to pursue National 5 Art & Design in S4 and Higher Art & Design in S5, however there are several flexible routes to cater for all learners.
