The S3 English course allows pupils to experience Level 3 and 4 English and Literacy Outcomes. The course will build on the pupils’ learning from S1 and S2 and help them to prepare for the Senior Phase.
Pupils will work on developing their Reading, Writing, Talking and Listening skills throughout the course. They will experience texts from a range of genres:
In each unit of work, pupils will take part in a range of tasks and activities both individually and as part of a group. They will gain a deeper understanding of the texts through reading and listening activities, and they will then be able to show this understanding by producing written and spoken work. Pupils will then be fully prepared for the transition to the senior phase.
Progression Pathways in English
Most pupils will follow a progression pathway in the Senior Phase which allows them to continue developing their English and Literacy skills at the appropriate level. Most pupils will be coursed at National 4 or 5 in S4, allowing progression to National 5 or Higher in S5. Pupils who successfully achieve Higher in S5 will be offered the opportunity to continue their English studies at Advanced Higher in S6.
There will also be the opportunity for pupils who are interested in extending their study of Media texts to choose National 4 or 5 Media alongside their English studies in S4. Media may also be offered as an alternative area of study to English for some pupils after S4.
