S3 Craft, Design and Technology

We live in a technological world. Technological practice shapes the world that we live in and affects our quality of life. We use technology at work, in learning, and at home. Technology, therefore, plays an increasingly important part in all aspects of our lives, individually and as a society.
Scotland has a strong tradition of excellence and innovation in technological research in areas such as engineering and renewable energy. Scotland’s people need to be skilled in technologies and to be aware of the impact of technologies on society and the environment, now and in the future.

 Looking to the future
‘Developing technologies such as carbon capture and storage and wind and tidal power will generate many thousands of jobs. In the next 10 to 15 years it is anticipated that some 60,000 to 90,000 jobs will be created in the green sector in Scotland in addition to the 80,000 that already exist.

Progression Pathways in CDT

In S3 learners will continue with their broad general education in Technology. Learners will work on Level 4 Technology Experiences and Outcomes and will cover all aspects of technology; graphics, computer aided drawing, designing and manufacturing. This provides a good grounding for the National courses in the senior phase which in turn are an excellent preparation for career paths in the traditional and emerging fields of design, engineering, manufacturing, graphics and construction.

In the senior phase, learners may choose from the range of courses; Graphic Communication, Design and Manufacture, Practical Woodworking and Practical Metalworking.
